Hi PD,
Well...of course it's a list compiled of films that *I've* seen. This fact is plainly stated in the introduction.
And does it make sense at all to recommend films on a 'Best Of' list that one hasn't actually seen?
Absolutely NOT.
Furthermore, I know enough to know that most of the lists that I've seen were compiled by people who haven't watched upwards of 200 actual martial arts films––which is why they suck.
And there were also many other films that I'd watched and enjoyed tremendously that *still* escaped my memory: Michael Jai White's "Blood and Bone" would have been on this list if I'd remembered it.
Anywho, what film is it that you love so much that wasn't included here? I think my list features quite a variety...
Oh, no. I guess I couldn't really take the Ninja Turtles or live action Street Fighter movies seriously enough to include them.
Still, I'm actually a big fan of the 2006 film "DOA: Dead or Alive," based on the 1990s Dead or Alive video game. But it still didn't make the cut.
Oh, wait. Lemme guess. You're fan of Japanese samurai movies, maybe?
Yes, my focus was on the martial arts choreography, and samurai films – while there are many that I think are great entertainment – didn't meet that metric. But they're still fantastic works of cinematic art.
The many films featuring "Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman" are among my all-time favs.
The 2002 film "The Twilight Samurai" was absolutely brilliant.
And at the end of Keanu Reeves' 2013 film "47 Ronin," I cried serious thug tears. LOL
But no, they didn't make the cut.
